Gardening

On Monday evening we had a heavy shower of rain so yesterday I looked out for the lad from next door so we could set a few plants that I had promised him. I didn't see him until the early afternoon when I saw the car pulling in their driveway. When it stopped I asked the carer if the lad was with her. She told me he was so I asked her to tell the lad I wished to see him. When he got out the car I asked him if he was prepared to go to the garden with me so that we could plant the broccoli and some leeks.  He said he would and I asked him to pop round when he was ready.
It wasn't long before the door bell rang, it was the lad so I first told him that as I had been for a haircut earlier that morning I called in at the shop opposite and bought a large bottle of lemonade so that we could have, before we started a port and lemon drink. He told me all he had to eat was a sausage roll so the drink went down well.
I had to take my fork and rake with me because the garden was covered in weeds and bluebells. Naturally I had to do the digging but I kept telling him to pick out the weeds and bluebell bulbs and toss them away. It took quite a while for there must have been at least 100 bluebell bulbs and plenty of weeds too. I did warn him of the abundance of bluebells and were very hard to get rid of completely.
We, mainly I managed to clear enough ground to set the plants so off we went round to my place again to fetch the plants. I told him to get plenty of water because we were going to get the plants in the ground so it had to be watered well.
He filled his watering can and I told him to give the holes that I had made for the leeks, plenty of water and when I had planted them I told him to give them another good drink. He had to fill the watering can a couple of times. Then it came to planting the broccoli. I only had 4 plants left, one being a little smaller than the other 3 so h planted that small one in his greenhouse. I made him fill the holes with water and when I planted them told him once more to give them a good drink.
Then it came to making a cage to protect them from the pigeons, incidentally the cabbage plants he had set out were eaten by the pigeons. He didn't seem to understand for he had told me they had been eaten but all he did was put slug pellets down. As soon as I saw them I told him that it was not the slugs but wood pigeons so we made a cage to protect the broccoli plants. I did tell him that we must also protect them soon from the butterflies because they would lay their eggs on the leaves and the caterpillars would eat the leaves up ruining the plants.
By the time I was done it was  my teatime and I must have been tired because I had a little nap after. In fact I was a little late in getting up this morning. I guess it was catching for the lad wishes me to wave to him every morning he goes to work. This morning he didn't catch the bus, I guess he overslept. I will eventually find out. More soon.
